Development and Evolution of Automotive Chassis Components in the Era of Electrification and Intelligence
The automotive chassis is one of the key components of a vehicle, primarily consisting of four systems: the transmission system, running system, steering system, and braking system. It plays a crucial role in the overall performance of the vehicle.
Functions and Composition of the Automotive Chassis
The chassis supports and installs the engine, electrical equipment, and accessories, forming the vehicle’s overall shape. It receives power output from the engine, transmits it to the drive wheels through various mechanisms, enables the vehicle to move, and ensures normal operation.

The chassis comprises four systems:
Transmission System: Transfers power from the engine to the drive wheels.
Running System: Supports the vehicle’s mass and absorbs/transmits various forces exerted by the road surface on the wheels.
Steering System: Ensures the vehicle travels in the direction selected by the driver.
Braking System: Slows or stops the vehicle as required by the driver, ensuring driving safety and reliable parking.
Two Approaches to EV Chassis Design
There are two main approaches to designing EV chassis:
1.Modified Traditional Chassis Design: This method maximally retains original chassis designs, modifying only necessary parts. It features low development difficulty, cost, and cycle time, while enabling platform sharing with traditional vehicles and extensive reuse of mature traditional components. However, it faces constraints such as limited universality, greater complexity in overall layout, and lower modular integration.
2.Dedicated EV Platform Development: Free from many constraints of shared fuel vehicle platforms, this approach allows for more optimized, highly integrated, and superior-performing chassis designs. Dedicated platforms have thus become a new trend in EV chassis development.

Future Prospects
With China’s rapid economic growth, research on electric vehicles has become increasingly comprehensive, and public understanding and acceptance of EVs continue to rise. As a critical vehicle component, the chassis directly impacts overall performance and is closely linked to improving and enhancing vehicle safety.
In the future, with further advancements in EV manufacturing technology, EV chassis systems will become more intelligent and user-friendly, while their safety and reliability will be further enhanced.
